Currently, our world comprises around 6 billion people. Of that number, 4 billion people live in poverty and of the 4 billion, around 1.1 billion live on less than $1 a day. One of the ways to combat this imbalance is through fairer trade practices. Fair trade enables the producer the ability to afford life’s basics such as clean water, food, shelter, health care and education. Fair trade also says “no” to child labour and sweatshops.
When we buy ethically produced gear we are supporting men and women from impoverished or disadvantaged backgrounds, enabling them to gain a sense of dignity and respect whist earning a decent living. Above right is a mosaic designed and made by a South African woman. It adorns the entrance wall to Sinikithemba in Durban, South Africa. Sinikithemba is an Aids/HIV outreach programme.
